This pig-in-lipstick is a desperate red herring thrown by the McCain campaign because they will do anything to distract the press from doing their job, like taking candidates to task for lying. McCain himself has used the same analogy.
The republicans were so quick to appropriate feminism as their latest pet cause, but equally quick to show that they just. don't. get. it.
This whole scenario smacks of "what-did-you-say-about-my-sister?" schoolyard chauvinism.
